We are extremely proud to have achieved the GOLD standard Kite Mark award for our PE provision for the FOURTH YEAR IN A ROW - Congratulations to all. Mrs Cribb, Mrs Aylett, Miss Lane and Steve from South Coast Sports are continuing to work hard in 2018-19 to aim for Platinum Standard, which will be a fantastic achievement
The School Games Mark is an awards scheme which rewards schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school. Ofsted use the Mark award as part of their inspection framework and schools can use it as a development tool.
Steve, our PE teacher, and his colleagues from South Coast Sports (SCS), teach excellent lessons across the school and we participate in a variety of competitive and friendly fixtures/events each term, as well as intra-school competitions year e.g.: Run-a-Marathon, Sports Day and Dance-athons.
We have signed up to Mid Sussex Active (MSA) this year to improve the range of sports opportunities open to the children and to ensure they have access to a greater range of competitions throughout the year.
We aim for every child in Years 1-6 to take part in at least one physical activity club each week. Our wide range of extremely popular sports and physical activity clubs for the Summer Term include Netball, Street Dance, Infant & Junior Football, Stoolball, Athletics, Infant Sports Skills, Infant & Junior Multi Sports, Kinball & Boccia (selected pupils), Cricket (before school) and Go Wild. Click here to view our full list of After-School & Morning Clubs
Pupils are actively encouraged to write sports reports, as well as to share achievements from sports/physical activities they are involved in outside school. These are celebrated in Friday Celebration Assemblies as well as on the PE noticeboard in school and in the section below.
Clubs commence the week beginning April 29th, with Cricket (morning), Stoolball, Athletics & GoWild are new additions this term. We already have the following fixtures/events to look forward to in the first few weeks, with more to come after half term.
April 24th - MSA Y5/6 Tag Rugby Tournament (Haywards Heath Rugby Club)
April 24th - MSA Y5/6 Tag Rugby Festival (Haywards Heath Rugby Club)
April 29th - MSA KS1 Badminton Festival (Triangle)
April 30th - KS2 Girls' Football Tournament (St Paul's)
May 9th - MSA Y4/5 Cricket Festival (Ansty Cricket Club)
May 17th - Y5 Cricket afternoon, Christ's Hospital School, Horsham (6 pupils)
Our first ever Boccia club is up and running on Tuesday afternoons, based on the positive feedback from the pupils who attended the Boccia and NAK Festival earlier this year. Joseph & Harry B (Y6) have enthusiastically taken on a Sport Leader role teaching Mrs Ford & selected Y3 children the skills & tactics involved - Boccia is related to bowls & petanque, but all players are seated.
Y3: Darcey, Jazzy, Sophie M, Ella M, Flo P, Thomas P, Tawseef
... then immediately after Boccia, 12 pupils are having great fun mastering Kin-Ball - with it's distinctive large colourful ball, Kin-Ball involves 3 teams of 4 playing against each other at the same time.
Y5: AJ, Jaydon, Willow N-G, Darcie, Imo B, Olivia Y3: Rosie-Lou, Zac, Ava, Scarlett, Lily-Mae, Kelsey
Y5: Veronica, Olivia S, Laaibah, Imogen E Y4: Macey, Maisie, Erykah, Freya, Sofia P & Aria
Approximately 140 girls from 13 schools enjoyed this wonderful morning of cricket skills & activities run by MSA in conjunction with Charlotte Burton & Ellen Burt from Sussex Womens' Cricket and Sports Leaders from St Paul's. Our cricketers are looking forward to playing more cricket in the summer term and there were a number of activities we will definitely be using at school in other sports clubs/Teddies.
Veronica & Olivia are busy writing an account of their experiences ...
This year we entered 2 teams into the much anticipated football tournament. Both teams played high quality football, demonstrating excellent behaviour and respect both on & off the pitch.
Blue Team: Marcus (C), Sam, Josh B, Archie M, Zak J, Oscar & Finn B
Red Team: Josh H (C), Rhys, Lewis, Hubert, Jack B, Asa, Noah Do. & Finley J
Marcus and Archie are writing their match report for us ...
Katie (C), Jaimeson, Mia, Sara, Isobel, Leon & William H
Congratulations to our fantastic team for finishing in incredibly well deserved 3rd place against strong competition! This was the last primary school netball tournament for our Y6 players, many who have been on our team since they were in Y4. We will continue to play matches at netball club and hopefully arrange some more friendlies before they leave us in July, but we wish them every success when they move up to Secondary school and potentially compete against each other!
Sara has written the following report for us ...
Y5 : Jasmine (C), Alice & Will H Y4: Finnley, Eddie, Hannah, Avni & Miriam
Mrs Aylett and Kiana Stagg (Bolnore Primary, and Magic Netball) had been tying to arrange a friendly match for a very long time, so both teams were eager to get some match experience, especially as neither school had previously competed against each other.
We played 6 rotations enabling everyone to play in a number of positions The score remained 0:0 through the first 2 rotations. We scored the 1st goal early in the third rotation, but Bolnore eventually beat us 12:1 demonstrating some strong shooting and marking. Despite the result, all 8 players gained in confidence throughout the match and have come away with lots to develop.
Thank you's to Bolnore for hosting & umpiring, Mrs Greany & Mrs Aylett and all the parents & Katie (Y6) who came to support.
Y6: Georgia G (C), Jaime, Isobel & Sam H Y5: Finn & Noah Do.
A fabulous afternoon of end-to-end, non stop, 4-aside hockey in which our team played incredibly well demonstrating maturity and determination throughout all 6 matches. We played St Joseph's (Haywards Heath) in a tough semi-final with them scoring to take the win literally on the final whistle!
We received some lovely comments from other schools in our group and event organisers. The Downlands Sports Leaders were positive role models - it is always great for our pupils to see how they could develop their own Sports Leadership skills once at Secondary school.
You should be phenomenally proud of your achievements both individually and as a team!

8 very enthusiastic, determined and committed children had a fantastic afternoon learning badminton skills along with pupils from 19 schools! Thank you to Mrs Ford and Mrs Hawkins for accompanying and to parents for your help with transport.

Balcombe proved to be strong opposition and beat us 16:0, despite several goal attempts by our team. Everyone learnt lots from the experience, both on and off the court. Thank you's to Mrs Greany and her daughter Josie for umpiring, and all the parents, brothers & sisters (plus children & TA's at Teddies!) for your support.
Older squad members now have the NEARS and Mid Sussex Y5/6 Tournaments to look forward to on March 5th & 6th; the Y5/4 squad have a friendly away match against Bolnore Primary on February 28th.
This was the first year we have attended this event - Well done to Darcie (Y5) for representing Handcross. Darcie says she took part in a variety of different gym activities, including a performance to The Greatest Showman, had a fun morning and "even made a new friend" from one of the other participating schools.
Y6: Daisy, Bruna, Harriet, Marcus & Alfie Y5: Jack, Lewis & Noah Do.
All 8 players took part in a carousel of Basketball focused skills and activities devised by Warden Park Sports Leaders. The following week they competed in the MSA tournament at St Paul's with matches being referred by their Sixth Form Basketballers. It was a great experience and the first time Handcross had played against many of the other schools.
Y5: Austin & Willow Y6: Joseph, Harry, Leila & Keira
had a brilliant time at the NAK and Boccia Festival - pupils from 20 different schools took part, each playing against five schools in both sports. The children were asked to split into two teams ... they decided upon "Boys" and "Girls" - the boys initially played Boccia, whilst the girls started with Kurling, swapping midway through the session.
It was the first time Handcross had participated in this event. New skills were learnt by everyone and great teamwork, respect & sporting behaviour was evident throughout from all our pupils.
Mrs Aylett received some lovely comments from staff accompanying other schools, as well as from several St Paul's Sports Leaders who had taken time to engage with the children as well as clearly explaining the rules to them and umpiring games.
We all came away enthusiastic to play more, although New Age Kurling was the unanimous favourite of the two!
The first Spring Term fixture took place on an extremely cold Wednesday afternoon in mid-January!
Jaime & Harriet and Finn, Connor & Joshua represented Handcross in their respective races against tough competition in wet, muddy and challenging conditions. We are incredibly proud of your achievements in reaching this stage of the competition - you are exemplary role models to those hoping to compete in next year's cross country events.
Many thanks to parents and family members who helped with transport and for your continued support.
Many thanks to Mrs Cribb and Miss Young who accompanied our excited & eager Y2's to this fantastic afternoon session!
Natalie, Abigail, Jessica, Finnley, Kairo, Zach H, Zachary, Rowan, Elizabeth, Kornnel, Niamh and Teddy took part in a carousel of activities alongside pupils from several other schools. Mrs Cribb commented on our pupils' excellent behaviour and says "It was wonderful to see how able our children were in their throwing & catching and ball control. We all had a great time!"
Additional thank you's to all the parents who helped with transport to/from Haywards Heath, and to the Oathall Sports Leaders for running the activities.
Despite extremely cold weather and fading light by the end, both our teams demonstrated their passion and commitment to netball in an afternoon of netball firsts ... our first fixture of the year, many Handcross Primary pupils taking part in their first ever matches having only started netball in September, plus it was the first time Handcross Park had organised this event.
Y3/4 team: Leo H (C), Finnley, Eddie, Florence K, Avni, Erykah, Isla Ja. and Amy - 4 matches against Gossops Green, Handcross Park A and Handcross Park B
Y5/6 team: Isobel (C), Sara, Mia, Harriet, Katie, Jaimeson, William H and Archie McC - 5 matches against Langley Green, Harlands A, Harlands B, Gossops Green and Handcross Park.
Mrs Aylett and Mrs Greany received some lovely comments throughout the afternoon and had amazing support from parents, grandparents & siblings. Thank you to Handcross Park and all the participating schools.
10 extremely excited and enthusiastic girls from Years 4,5,&6 took part in this high energy afternoon of Funky Aerobics, Zumba, Dance and Yoga at The Triangle - in total there were 360 girls from 26 different schools across Mid Sussex!!
Thank you to parents, grandparents and Mrs Aylett who all helped with transport - It was the first time Handcross had taken part in this event, but we'd all love to go to similar events in the future!
Our team of 5 girls and 5 boys took part in this much anticipated and well attended event. Congratulations to all 10 runners. Of particular note are Finn (Y5), Harriet (Y6) & Jaimeson (Y6) who have all progressed through to the Mid Sussex Area finals on January 16th, and Erykah & Cole who finished in their respective Top 15 - unfortunately as they are currently in Y4 neither are eligible to compete in the Area Final this year, but show exceptional potential for next year's event.
We would like to thank all the parents and grandparents who helped with transport and for their wonderful support & encouragement.
Harriet and Jaimeson have written the following report:
Last year Gymnasts, Swimmers and Horse Riders featured in our Hall of Fame, telling us more about their out of school sporty interests and celebrating some of their achievements.
If you or a group of like minded active friends would like to feature in the Hall of Fame on the website and PE noticeboard, please talk to Mrs Aylett or Mrs Cribb.
Keep staying Safe, Happy and Aiming High!
